A side gusset is a bag that has folds (gusset) along both sides of the bag. Particularly the gussets allow for the bag to expand and stand upright when filled. Also, they work great for coffee packaging. They are great for packaging tea, dry foods, powdered items, and even for pet foods. In addition, they can also be with or without a one-way valve. The purpose of side gusseted bags is for packaging products. They mainly focus on packaging food and food-related items such as coffee, tea, snacks, and pet food. However, side-gusset bags have also been used to package hygiene items, clothing, and even non-editable products. Side gusseted bags package certain goods, but it all depends on the material.
Main Features of Side Gusset Bag
High Barrier Feature With Aluminum Foil
Side gusset bags are used in food packaging and packaging of other consumer goods. They are used to create a barrier between the product and the environment. Side gusseted panels provide a high barrier to prevent loss of product quality or contamination. The side gusset bag has two panels, one on each side, which expand when the product inside is expanded or volume increases. The side panels are heat-sealed to create a seal that prevents oxygen and moisture from getting in and ruining the product inside.
Tear Notches: Easy To Open Heat-Sealed
A side gusset bag with a tear notch is an easy way to open the bag. The tear notch is placed on the top and bottom side of the bag and it can be torn off easily. This type of packaging is most often used for food packaging because it is easy to open and close. The side gusset bag with a tear notch has many advantages over other types of bags. For one, it is easy to open and close, which makes it perfect for food packaging. On top of that, since the seal can be torn off easily, this type of packaging does not have any leftover strings or adhesive that might get stuck on the product inside.
Custom Printing is Available on Each Side
Side Gusset Bags are perfect for carrying your promotional items or products. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, which can be customized with your brand logo and design. Side Gusset Bags offer the best promotional packaging for items that need to be displayed on both sides like clothing, shoes, jewelry, and other fashion accessories. These bags are a cost-effective way to promote your brand in a variety of environments. They come in a wide range of sizes and are available on each side for branding purposes.
Environmental Sustainability
The primary advantage of recyclable side gusset bags is their eco-friendly nature. They are designed to be recycled, which reduces the amount of plastic waste in landfills and oceans, contributing to environmental conservation.
Versatility
Recyclable side gusset bags are versatile and can be used for a wide range of products, including coffee, tea, snacks, pet food, dry goods, and more. They are available in various sizes to accommodate different product volumes. So we can often see recyclable side gusset coffee bags, recyclable side gusset pet food bags, etc.
Extended Shelf Life
Side gusset bags are often designed with multiple layers, including barrier films, to protect the contents from moisture, oxygen, and UV light. This helps extend the shelf life of perishable products, such as coffee beans or snacks.
Excellent Barrier Properties
Recyclable side gusset bags can be engineered with specific barrier properties, making them suitable for products that require protection from external elements. This can help maintain product freshness and quality. There are many film structures to make this barrier functions. Such as 100% recyclable high barrier mono-material PE side gusset bags.
Types of Gusset Bag
Round gusset bags are for storing and displaying products on shelves. They are relatively symmetrical in their structure and are one of the most landfill-friendly, eco-friendly, and cost-effective bags. The bag's edge is welded to the side of the supporting laminated layers, strengthening the overall structure of the bag and allowing it to stand upright. The bags are a popular option for light products as these products are generally delicate and fragile. Hence, these lightweight products must be packaged securely without tipping over. The packaging bags are shorter in height and similar to smaller like coffee grounds, loose-leaf tea, and flour. Round gusset bags can also be customized to reflect the business's branding and creative designs.
Side gusset bags feature a tubular shape due to their expansion from the sides. With a slim profile and significant depth, they accommodate a variety of products. Their seamless back design is ideal for uninterrupted branding, enhancing their aesthetic appeal on shelves. These bags have gussets on both sides, giving them a distinct shape compared to the more box-like bottom gusset bags. While they might appear less striking on a shelf, they provide ample space for product details and brand promotion. As they fill, their capacity increases substantially. Often chosen for storing dried fruits, snacks, coffee, and tea, side gusset bags have gained favor in the food and snack sectors. Their design facilitates vertical and horizontal displays, making them a great packaging for on-shelf presentations.
Flat Flat-bottom gusset Bags, often referred to as box pouches, merge the attributes of both the stand-up pouch and the side gusset bag. The resulting design is one of distinct stability, resembling a box. These bags are characterized by their flat base and the presence of gussets on all their sides. One of their features is the ability to maintain an upright position, even when not filled. This structural advantage guarantees a prominent and optimal display on store shelves, enhancing their visibility and appeal.
Poly
Poly materials are common in some side-gusset pouch designs, including 8.0 mil material in high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) options. Poly side gusset bags are great for larger, bulkier items. Use these poly bags for grains, bread, bagels, popcorn and so much more.
Crystal Clear
Crystal Clear Side Gusset Bags are made with crystal clear PP material to put your product on full display. These bags are great for gift sets, cookies, candies and more.
Kraft
Kraft side gusset bags are constructed of brown kraft paper for an artisanal look and feel. Use these for breads, donuts and cookies.
Glassine
Made with glassine paper, these glassine side gusset bags are grease resistant and perfect for baked goods like brownies, cookies, waffles, and more.

Application of Side Gusset Bag
Food Packaging
One of the main uses for gusseted poly bags is the packaging of various types of food. Gusseted bags are perfect for bulk candy, nuts, coffee, meat products, baked goods like bread, bagels, rolls, and cookies, and even ice.
Packaging of Bulky Products
With their ability to expand and the variety of shapes and sizes they come in, gusseted poly bags offer a great packaging solution for businesses with products that are large, bulky, or oddly shaped.
Packaging of Multiple Loose Items
From hardware like nuts and bolts and nails to arts and craft supplies, hospital and vet medications, or even agricultural items like grain and feed, if your business needs to package multiple loose items together, gusseted poly bags can solve your packaging needs.
Protective Storage
If you need to cover products stored on pallets, gusseted poly bags have got you covered. They are more cost-effective than pallet tarps, can accommodate large sizes, and their strength offers optimum protection. You can also use them for box liners to keep products clean and safe.
Packaging Items on the Move
Gusseted poly bags can be used to protect things like mattresses from dirt and moisture when storing, displaying, or moving. They also make great grab-and-go “t-shirt bags” like the kind you see at grocery stores with handles that resemble sleeves on a shirt. Because they're lightweight, easy to carry, and hold all shapes and sizes of products, gusseted poly bags used in this manner are the perfect
Lamination Processes for Side Gusset Bag

Solventbase Lamination
The process involves coating adhesive on the film. The adhesive is mixed in solvent and made thin for coating through engraved rollers. The coated film is passed through the drying tunnel to dry the solvent of adhesive from the film. Then this coated film is pressed with another film at appropriate pressure and temperature so that it is laminated with other film. Since the technology uses solvent for carrying adhesive on the film, the laminate has higher solvent traces and hence not preferred for food-grade laminate. Also, the cost of lamination is higher as it wastes solvent, and hot air to dry the solvent, and power consumption is also high.

Solventless Lamination
In this process, the two-component adhesive is applied to the film. No solvent is used for the dilution of the adhesive. The coated film is pasted with another film and rewind on the rewinder unit. The roll is then kept for curing for a few hours and then bonding takes place. Since in this process no solvent is used for dilution it is preferred for the food industry. Also, the cost of lamination is lower as compared to solvent-based lamination as the solvent is not being used as a carrier for adhesive, no hot air requirement and power consumption is low. The lamination is preferred for packing food items.

Wet lamination
Wet lamination is a laminating process used to laminate two substrates, one of which is porous, such as paper or board. For example, foil and paper substrate lamination may be accomplished through a wet lamination process. In this, process, the adhesive is applied to the film and immediately pressed another film before passing through the drying tunnel. This drying process is where the adhesive materials will dry, essentially adhering the two films together. Therefore, the two films need to be combined before the adhesive is dried in the oven. Both solventbase and solventless lamination are the laminating process used to laminate two substrates, both of which are non-porous, or impervious to filtration.

Extrusion Lamination
In this process no adhesive is used and the lamination is done with the help of molten poly. In this process, one film is coated with a polymer which assists the adhesion of poly on the film. The molten poly is then dropped on the coated film and the second film is pasted on it. Hence the lamination is an instant process and the laminated film is ready for the next process and no curing is required. Since in this process, a thin layer of poly (around 8-10 microns) is used for lamination the final laminated product is four layers instead of three layers formed on a solvent base or solventless.
